In China, there is an early crackdown on the "JASMINE" revolt; there is a black out of internet news.
Everywhere, there is turmoil.
But I am not reading anything done by the UN to stop the killings and attacks on peaceful marchers.
Is it because the UN has a mandate only in International Conflicts and not on internal violence?
Or has the role of UN has been usurped by the USA?
The UN has only called for end of crackdown in Lybia, but no action taken.
I think that what is happening across countries in the Middle East is too serious and cannot be left only to these contries, but the International community has a responsibility to pressurose the regimes in stoppng the un-armed protesters.

The United Nations seems to be disinterested in the happening accross any other countries except U.S, UK and major republics, this is not the first time that they have kept quite, take the case of Iraq, when the western power claimed that there existed chemical weapon-- read as weapon of mass distruction.. they just went by their line and the rest is history.
ReplyDeleteThere is a need for reform in the United Nations and all this veto powers should be abolised and proper democratic vote on account should be taken and a fresh constituion which should have empowerment even to take action aganist developed countries should be incorporated and only then there will be some meaning to this otherwise insipid structure of Human endeavour.

Very well said.The UN is just being used by the super powers for their own purposes.I was watching the deposition of Secretary of State- General Colin Powell, showing satellite images purported to be sites of Weapons of Mass destruction in Iraq in 2003, prior to the attack. He seemed, from his facial expression,that he is not sure of himself. Now in hindsight we know that all those hullabulla about Saddam hiding WMD are fabricated lies to hood wink the world and to give a false reason to US aggression on Iraq.
ReplyDeleteThink of the thousands of Iraqi innocent people who were killed in cross fire and the destruction which continues even now.Similarly the UN is used to slap sanction against Iran, North Korea and other countries opposed to the US.The UN has become an instrument for the US.
The suggestions for a new constitution, abolishing the Veto power and bringing in democracy in its functioning are good ones.
